Curriculum-KS1

Our KS1 curriculum builds on the excellent practice from Early Years which provides the opportunity for both adult directed and child intiated learning. In KS1 the balance of adult directed and child intiated learning, swings more towards adult directed for a large proprotion of the day. However, we value and promote independent learning and ensure that there are opportunities for this during the school day.

Key Stage One Curriculum (KS1)

The current National curriculum came into force in September 2014.

The National Curriculum is divided up into three Core subjects and seven Foundation subjects. The Key Stage One curriculum spans both Year 1 and Year 2.

In addition, children are also taught R.E. which is not a subject of the National Curriculum, but which is statutory. We follow the Hampshire syllabus 'Living Difference' Information can be found here

Core Subjects

English

The English curriculum encompasses Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. Throughout the year we will provide detailed information to parents through information evenings and workshops. This is to ensure that parents feel well informed about the curriculum we offer and expectations of children at different stages of their learning.

We use good quality texts to drive our English curriculum. Please click on the links below to view our long term overview fro English:

Reading

Below is a copy of the slides from the curriculum information session we held in January

We do not have one set reading scheme in school as we believe children need to experience a range and variety of books. Our reading books are graded by colour according to difficulty. These are known as Book Bands and we have made recent changes to the books we provide in the earlier colour bands to ensure these are phonetically decodable. This means your child can apply their phonic and tricky word knowledge to read the book as independently as possible.  Within the bands, books are taken from several different established schemes such as Bug Club, Rigby Star and Oxford Reading Tree. This system ensures that children are exposed to a wide variety of authors and genres and can become very discerning in their choices. As there is a range of books in each band, some may be slightly more challenging or easier and yet still teach the same skills.

There are 14 colours within the scheme and within each colour there are a mixture of scheme and 'real' books which are pitched at a similar level designed to support specific skills for that stage. The colour bands are organised to support the national curriculum expectations from Early Years Foundation Stage right through to the beginning of Key Stage 2 (Year 3 expectations).

Phonics

Below is a copy of the slides from the curriculum information session planned for November.

We follow the scheme for phonics as developed by the government, Letters and Sounds. This provides a structure and framework to ensure progression in the teaching of phonics throughout our school. We use a computer based program called Phonics Play to support the delivery of the Letters and Sounds scheme.

Phonic teaching is organised into Phases. Please click on each Phase below to find out more information about the content of each Phase:

Science

The Science curriculum for Key Stage 1 is largely rooted in environmental science and requires the children to be really familiar with the surroundings within which they are growing up. We are fortunate that we are situated in such an amazing locality and we frequently use the immediate and local environment to support the teaching of Science.
