Design and Technology
Vision for Design and Technology
At the Meon Valley Federation, we envision Design and Technology as a dynamic part of our curriculum, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and a love for learning in our young children. Our aim is to provide a stimulating, supportive and inclusive environment where children can explore, create, and innovate, laying the foundation for lifelong learning and curiosity.
Creativity and Innovation We believe that every child is inherently creative and has the potential to be an innovator. Our D&T curriculum is designed to nurture this creativity by providing opportunities for children to engage in hands-on, practical activities. Through designing, making, and evaluating their own products, children learn to think critically and develop their problem-solving skills. We encourage them to take risks, experiment with different materials and techniques, and learn from their mistakes, fostering a growth mindset.
Practical Skills and Knowledge Our D&T learning journeys aim to equip children with a broad range of practical skills and knowledge. From an early age, children are introduced to basic tools and materials, learning how to use them safely and effectively. They explore different construction techniques, understand the properties of various materials, and learn about simple mechanisms and structures. This practical knowledge is complemented by an understanding of the design process, from initial ideas and planning to making and evaluating.
Cross-Curricular Connections Design and Technology is not taught in isolation but is integrated across the curriculum. We make connections with subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Art, and Literacy, providing a rich and varied learning experience. For example, children might use their mathematical skills to measure and cut materials accurately, apply scientific principles to understand how structures work, or use their literacy skills to write instructions and evaluate their projects. This cross-curricular approach helps children see the relevance of their learning and how different subjects interconnect.
Inclusivity and Accessibility We are committed to ensuring that D&T is accessible to all children, regardless of their background or abilities. Our lessons are designed to be inclusive, with differentiated activities and support to meet the needs of every child. We celebrate diversity and encourage children to bring their own experiences and ideas into their projects, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
Sustainability and Responsibility In our D&T curriculum, we emphasize the importance of sustainability and responsible use of resources. Children learn about the environmental impact of different materials and processes, and are encouraged to think about how they can design and make products that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. This helps to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness of the wider world.
In summary, our vision for Design and Technology is to inspire and empower children to be creative, confident, and capable learners. Through a rich and engaging curriculum, we aim to develop their practical skills, critical thinking, and love for learning, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
How do we plan D&T?
At the Meon Valley Federation, we currently use Kapow Primary to support our planning for D&T. This lays out the long term, medium term and short term planning which the class teachers then adapt to meet the needs of the children within the classes.
Below are some examples of medium term planning:
