Our Vision for History at the Meon Valley Federation

At our infant school, we envision the teaching of History as a vital part of our curriculum, designed to inspire curiosity, foster a sense of identity, and develop a deeper understanding of the world. Our History curriculum is driven by the principles of diversity, citizenship, empathy, and resilience, ensuring that our young learners grow into informed, compassionate, and active members of society.

Diversity We believe that a diverse History curriculum is essential for helping children appreciate the rich tapestry of human experience. Our aim is to introduce students to a wide range of historical figures, cultures, and events from different times and places. By exploring the stories of people from various backgrounds, children learn to value and respect differences, fostering an inclusive mindset. We strive to present a balanced view of history, highlighting the contributions of individuals and groups who have often been overlooked, and celebrating the achievements of diverse communities.

Citizenship Understanding history is crucial for developing a sense of citizenship. Our curriculum is designed to help children understand their place in the world and the impact of historical events on contemporary society. Through the study of significant events and movements, children learn about the development of democratic values, human rights, and social justice. We encourage students to think critically about the past and its relevance to the present, helping them to become informed and responsible citizens who are aware of their rights and responsibilities.

Empathy Empathy is at the heart of our History curriculum. We aim to help children develop the ability to understand and share the feelings of others by exploring the lives and experiences of people from different times and places. Through storytelling, role-playing, and discussions, children are encouraged to put themselves in the shoes of historical figures, considering their perspectives and emotions. This approach helps to build emotional intelligence and fosters a deeper connection to the human experience.

Resilience Studying history provides valuable lessons in resilience. By learning about the challenges and triumphs of people in the past, children gain insights into the strength and determination required to overcome adversity. Our curriculum includes stories of perseverance, innovation, and courage, showing children that setbacks and failures are part of the journey to success. We aim to inspire our students to develop their own resilience, understanding that they too can face challenges with confidence and determination.

In summary, our vision for History is to create a curriculum that is rich, inclusive, and engaging. By focusing on diversity, citizenship, empathy, and resilience, we aim to provide our young learners with a strong foundation in historical knowledge and skills. We believe that this approach will not only enhance their understanding of the past but also prepare them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and resilient individuals in the future.
