Vision for Geography in the Meon Valley Federation

At the Meon Valley Federation we envision the teaching of Geography as a fundamental part of our curriculum, designed to ignite curiosity about the world, foster a sense of place, and develop a deeper understanding of our environment and its diverse inhabitants. Our Geography curriculum is driven by the principles of diversity, citizenship, empathy, and resilience, ensuring that our young learners grow into informed, compassionate, and active global citizens.

Diversity We believe that a diverse Geography curriculum is essential for helping children appreciate the vast array of cultures, landscapes, and ecosystems that make up our world. Our aim is to introduce students to a wide range of geographical locations and communities, both locally and globally. By exploring different environments and ways of life, children learn to value and respect diversity, fostering an inclusive mindset. We strive to present a balanced view of the world, highlighting the unique characteristics and contributions of various regions and peoples.

Citizenship Understanding geography is crucial for developing a sense of global citizenship. Our curriculum is designed to help children understand their place in the world and the interconnectedness of different regions and communities. Through the study of geographical features, human-environment interactions, and global issues, children learn about the importance of sustainability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. We encourage students to think critically about their impact on the world and how they can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

Empathy Empathy is at the heart of our Geography curriculum. We aim to help children develop the ability to understand and appreciate the experiences and perspectives of people from different parts of the world. Through storytelling, role-playing, and discussions, children are encouraged to consider the lives of others, fostering a deeper connection to the global community. This approach helps to build emotional intelligence and promotes a sense of solidarity with people from diverse backgrounds.

Resilience Studying geography provides valuable lessons in resilience. By learning about the challenges faced by different communities and environments, children gain insights into the strength and adaptability required to thrive in diverse conditions. Our curriculum includes stories of communities overcoming natural disasters, adapting to climate change, and finding innovative solutions to environmental challenges. We aim to inspire our students to develop their own resilience, understanding that they too can face challenges with confidence and determination.

In summary, our vision for Geography is to create a curriculum that is rich, inclusive, and engaging. By focusing on diversity, citizenship, empathy, and resilience, we aim to provide our young learners with a strong foundation in geographical knowledge and skills. We believe that this approach will not only enhance their understanding of the world but also prepare them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and resilient individuals in the future.
