Vision for Science

As Scientists of the Meon Valley Federation we nurture children’s natural curiosity and encourage them to ask questions about the world around them. Through high- quality lessons children will gain an abundance of scientific knowledge and understanding of various methods, processes and uses of science in an ever changing and evolving society.

Diversity We believe that a diverse Science curriculum is essential for helping children appreciate the vast array of life forms, ecosystems, and scientific contributions from around the world. Our aim is to introduce students to a wide range of scientific concepts, discoveries, and innovators from various cultures and backgrounds. By exploring different scientific phenomena and the contributions of diverse scientists, children learn to value and respect diversity, fostering an inclusive mindset. We strive to present a balanced view of science, highlighting the achievements of individuals and groups who have often been overlooked.

Citizenship Understanding science is crucial for developing a sense of global citizenship. Our curriculum is designed to help children understand their role in the natural world and the impact of human activities on the environment. Through the study of ecosystems, sustainability, and environmental issues, children learn about the importance of conservation, responsible resource use, and the interconnectedness of all living things. We encourage students to think critically about their actions and how they can contribute to a more sustainable and healthy planet.

Empathy Empathy is at the heart of our Science curriculum. We aim to help children develop the ability to understand and appreciate the experiences and needs of other living organisms. Through hands-on activities, observations, and discussions, children are encouraged to consider the perspectives of plants, animals, and other living beings, fostering a deeper connection to the natural world. This approach helps to build emotional intelligence and promotes a sense of responsibility and care for all forms of life.

Resilience Studying science provides valuable lessons in resilience. By learning about the challenges faced by living organisms and ecosystems, children gain insights into the strength and adaptability required to survive and thrive in diverse conditions. Our curriculum includes stories of scientific discoveries, innovations, and the perseverance of scientists who overcame obstacles to advance our understanding of the world. We aim to inspire our students to develop their own resilience, understanding that they too can face challenges with curiosity, determination, and a problem-solving mindset.

In summary, our vision for Science is to develop a curriculum that is rich, inclusive, and engaging. By focusing on diversity, citizenship, empathy, and resilience, we aim to provide our young learners with a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and skills. We believe that this approach will not only enhance their understanding of the natural world but also prepare them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and resilient individuals in the future.

How do we plan Science?
We use a combination of the National Curriculum, Hampshire Improvement and Advisory Service and Kapow to plan high quality lessons for our children. Alongside these we regularly assess children's learning to adapt and broaden their skills in answering scientific questions.

What do children say about Science is our school?
'I liked learning more about plants as there are different ones to look at'.

'I enjoy using what we have learned to answer a question using equipment to prove our prediction'.

'I like observing how things change over time'.
